How do medi-aesthetic treatments target visible signs of premature…

Whether we like it or not, modern day society revolves around image, with photos of flawless and youthful skin being a regular daily feature on digital media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

The pressure to look ‘perfect’ is relentless and we often find ourselves reading articles relating to how our looks are directly associated with success and happiness, so it will come as no surprise that the UK beauty industry is one sector that’s rarely affected by economic downturn and recession. Employing over 1 million people and estimated to be worth £17 billion pounds in  2016 alone, beauty treatments are big business and in the quest to find the elixir of ‘eternal youth’, many of us are turning to advanced medi-aesthetics treatments to address unwanted signs of premature ageing.

As consumers who work hard for our money, we’re also becoming increasingly savvy about our chosen skincare procedures and are simply no longer prepared to accept the ‘miraculous’ promises that have been historically made to us by large cosmetic houses. As a generation of smart purchasers, we’ve begun to take research into our own hands and before booking a high price point treatment, make considerable effort to find out if the technology and products used really will provide the results that they claim to deliver.

As the owner of Aspire Health and Beauty and accredited Beauty Therapist with over 16 years of experience and numerous post graduate qualifications in laser/IPL, dermabrasion and medi-aesthetics treatments,  to name a few, I take great pride in offering treatments which I have not only personally experienced, but ones which I believe in and endorse 100%, which is why you’ll only find a small selection of bespoke therapies on our portfolio of treatments, versus numerous of mass market grooming essentials.

Having recently introduced a new advanced medi-aesthetics procedure to our treatment menu, I wanted to take the opportunity to address some key questions relating to ageing that both myself and my team of Aspire Therapists are asked on a regular basis, which will hopefully answer your immediate questions relating to the performance and longevity of medi-aesthetics treatments.

What’s the difference between a beauty therapy cosmeceutical facial and medi-aesthetics treatment?

Medi-aesthetics treatments are a range of advanced procedures which are provided by  beauty therapists who have undertaken advanced post graduate training and who have been practicing for many years. In addition to gaining accredited qualifications in anatomy and physiology and facial/body therapies, medi-aesthetics practitioners have gone onto gain further training in disciplines such as laser and IPL, skin peels, electrolysis, mesotherapy, dermal needling, cryotherapy, phototherapy, cosmetic chemistry and the latest non-surgical medical aesthetics enhancements.  Unlike clinical procedures performed by a registered cosmetic surgeon, or standard facial and body therapies provided by a qualified therapist using an array of specifically designed dermatologically endorsed products, non-invasive medi-aesthetics treatments as a general rule use active high grade skinceuticals which are extremely effective when used in conjunction with a range of advanced treatment modalities. Medi-aesthetics treatments also require very little down time in comparison to invasive surgical procedures, making them a highly sought after and cost effective option to results driven, target specific skincare.

What causes our skin to age?

Before we look into how medi-aesthetics treatments can precisely address our anti-ageing concerns, it’s important to understand some of the fundamental factors which cause our skin to age. Healthy skin is categorised by its smooth, plump and flawless appearance, even colouration and firm, radiant tone.

When we’re younger our skin is maintained due to an abundance of key components such as collagen and elastin, which help to provide shape, structure, support and elasticity. Glycosaminoglycans also play a role in keeping our skin hydrated and active metabolisms, good genes and a high number of oxygenated red blood cells also ensure our complexions remain in top shape.

However as we mature and enter middle age, our bodies begin to slow down and the production of these vital skincare essentials, combined with intrinsic (the natural ageing process) and extrinsic factors (external occurrences such as environmental pollution, over exposure to damaging UV rays, free radical damage, an unbalanced diet and poor lifestyle choices), all contribute towards the topical ageing of our skin.

Officially the ageing process begins as early as our 20’s, when collagen production starts to decline and by the time women in particular reach the menopause, the significant reduction of oestrogen further contributes to our complexions becoming drier and skin thinner and sallow, with  wrinkles, deep expression lines, laxity and hyper-pigmentation becoming prevalent.

Papillae (cone shaped projections) which are found underneath the basal layer of the epidermal/dermal junction get smaller in size and flatter. Highly reactive chemical compounds known as aldehydes decrease our energy production by inhibiting Coenzyme A and excessive glucose intake contributes to the cross linking of proteins which damage collagen fibres, making them harden and obstructing nutrient and waste transfer, which results in wrinkles and skin discolouration.

Fibroblast cells also cease to undergo cell division as we age, unless stimulated by wound healing, which is why medi-aesthetics treatments which artificially stimulate the production of collagen can be so beneficial in the quest to regain a radiant glow.

How can medi-aesthetics treatments improve the tone and vibrancy of our skin?

Medi aesthetic treatments use a combination of cosmeceutical products and advanced technology to target specific skin care concerns. Treatments such as the eDerma Pen which we offer at Aspire artificially creates microtrauma, triggering the skin’s natural healing process, which generates the synthesis of collagen a key protein required to maintain a youthful appearance. Procedures such a dermal rollers and mesotherapy enable active cosmetic grade ingredients such as ascorbic acid and retinols to be delivered directly into the skin and epidermal-dermal intercellular junction, whilst electrolysis and laser procedures focus on the permanent eradication of unwanted hairs in addition to the removal of skin tags, keratinised lesions and hyper-pigmentation such as spider veins, whilst laser skin rejuvenation uses specifically designed lasers and led light therapy which have the capabilities to penetrate deeper into the skin than standard topical cosmetic products.

As with any beauty treatment, long term success will depend not only on the treatment itself but also on how we look after our bodies and nourish them with nutrient rich food. When performed by a competent practitioner medi-aesthetics procedures will undoubtedly be your secret weapon to combat visible signs of ageing and here at Aspire Health and Beauty we are looking forward to supporting you every step of the way in your skincare journey.

How LED Light Therapy Can Improve Your Skin

It’s been referred to as the one of the most beneficial treatments that the beauty industry has seen in a long time and has rapidly become a favourite of celebrities such as Katy Perry, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba and Kourtney Kardashian to name a few, who’ve all posted images of themselves on their social media platforms wearing the latest beauty accessory, also known as an ‘LED Light Therapy Mask’. But what’s so special about the treatment and why do leading skincare aestheticians and beauty therapists believe that this sudden craze is here to stay?

What is LED Light Therapy

LED Light therapy, also known as colour light therapy or Phototherapy in the medical world, is a technology which has been around for many years. If you cast your minds back to those weekly physics lesson at school, you may just remember that rather important inventor known as Albert Einstein who founded the theory of light. Well fast forward in time and NASA Space Station have spent years carrying out extensive research into the subject and were the first to use light therapy for wound healing, which started the medical world took great interest in, using light therapy to treat specific conditions such as severe cases of Eczema and to speed up tissue healing.

Our bodies are a complex ecosystem in their own right and have the ability to absorb certain wavelengths and spectrums of light. For years it’s been known that light can enhance our brain activity in memory related regions, address depression and aid our sleep cycle, however research into the use of it on the skin have highlighted the results it can have when working to combat a range of conditions from acne to cellular imbalances, inflammation and dull lack lustre skin.

How does an LED Mask work?

When using an LED (light emitting diode) mask, handheld device or canopy, a series of UV-free wavelengths are released directly onto the epidermis, which are then penetrated into the skin at various depths. The light spectrums provide energy to our cells, due to it being converted into intracellular energy, which speeds up the healing process, whilst eliminating bacteria and decreasing pore size.

As our skin absorbs light from the mask, blood flow to the area increases, which when combined with the healing process triggers the production of collagen and elastin, which begin to decrease as we age.

What are the benefits of each light spectrum?

Each light spectrum offers a series of unique benefits. Whilst some masks and devices will combine two colours together for dual activity, others prefer to offer up to 6 individual spectrums to enable your therapist to carry out a tailor made treatment plan, which we’d personally recommend.

Red light therapy increases collagen and elastin production as the body’s natural healing process is stimulated. This light not only enhances ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) production, but also supports cellular renewal. Red light is predominantly used to improve circulation and blood flow, targeting fine lines and wrinkles whilst increasing hydration and removing unwanted waste materials from the skin’s surface.

Blue light therapy is used to effectively treat acne, as it destroys p. acne bacteria (propionibacterium Acnes). This modality purifies the skin whilst calming redness, minimising irritation and regulating sebum production.

Yellow light therapy improves the exchange of oxygen in the cells, promotes lymphatic drainage, reduces toxin inflammation and stimulates the sensory motor nervous system. This modality is often used to target redness and ultraviolet damage, whilst decreasing the appearance of blood vessels.

White light therapy is used to speed up metabolism and also address Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) syndrome.

With such a diverse range of benefits achievable from this treatment, we offer it as either a 30 minute stand-alone modality to target acne and rejuvenate the skin, or incorporated with our advanced medi-aesthetics treatments to immediately reduce  redness and inflammation, whilst encouraging the healing process and cellular regeneration.

What is Carboxy Gel & how does it work?

Carboxy gel is a natural way of excreting waste matter from the skin and providing nutrients and oxygen to feed, nourish regenerate and balance. By increasing the Co2 concentration within the skin it naturally leads to a decrease in pH which will result in the release of oxygen. The Riox carboxy therapy facial improves skin oxygenation immediately following treatment, which in effect results in an artificial Bohr effect.

Bohr Effect

The Bohr effect is a physiological phenomenon first described by the Danish physiologist Christian Bohr, stating that haemoglobin’s oxygen binding affinity is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. Therefore the lower the pH which creates a more acidic environment within the skin, haemoglobin will bind to oxygen with less affinity. Since carbon dioxide is in direct equilibrium with the concentration of protons in the blood, increasing blood carbon dioxide content causes a decrease in pH, which leads to a decrease in affinity for oxygen by haemoglobin. This results in easier oxygen release in capillaries. When we breathe in oxygen, red blood cells transport it around to every cell in our body, a critical process which results in an increase of ATP. Red blood cells carry oxygen efficiently because of a special protein inside of them called haemoglobin. As blood passes through the lungs, the haemoglobin picks up oxygen because of the increased oxygen pressure in the capillaries of the lungs, and can then release this oxygen to body cells where the oxygen pressure in the tissues is lower. In addition, the red blood cells can pick up the waste product, carbon dioxide, some of which is carried by the haemoglobin (at a different site from where it carries the oxygen), while the rest is dissolved in the plasma. The high carbon dioxide levels in the tissues lowers the pH, and the binding of haemoglobin to carbon dioxide causes a conformational change that facilitates the release of oxygen. The carbon dioxide is then released once the red blood cells reach the lungs. Riox will increase Co2 levels, the client’s skin pH will be lowed and Oxygen in the cells will increase. This helps the cells carry out their natural function and speeds up the repair and regeneration process.

Treatment

The carboxy gel is applied evenly over the face and neck. The face and neck mask are then placed on top of the gel. The mask is tapped gently to generate Co2. The Co2 penetrates the blood vessels which in turn release oxygen via haemoglobin. The gel will bubble on the skin whilst the mask is applied for 20-30 minutes. The chemical reaction that takes place effectively helps to remove unwanted toxins from the skin whilst at the same time increasing skin nutrition. The active ingredients will improve skin elasticity, strengthening skin pores, resulting in a reduction of size over a course of treatments. Expression lines will be reduced, the skin will feel firmer and look more radiant as skin tone is balanced. Riox Co2 Carboxy Therapy Mask is extremely good at treating oily acne skin as carbon dioxide can lower the pH which can inhibit the growth of bacteria.
