What is Carboxy Gel & how does it work?
Carboxy gel is a natural way of excreting waste matter from the skin and providing nutrients and oxygen to feed, nourish regenerate and balance. By increasing the Co2 concentration within the skin it naturally leads to a decrease in pH which will result in the release of oxygen. The Riox carboxy therapy facial improves skin oxygenation immediately following treatment, which in effect results in an artificial Bohr effect.
Bohr Effect
The Bohr effect is a physiological phenomenon first described by the Danish physiologist Christian Bohr, stating that haemoglobin’s oxygen binding affinity is inversely related both to acidity and to the concentration of carbon dioxide. Therefore the lower the pH which creates a more acidic environment within the skin, haemoglobin will bind to oxygen with less affinity. Since carbon dioxide is in direct equilibrium with the concentration of protons in the blood, increasing blood carbon dioxide content causes a decrease in pH, which leads to a decrease in affinity for oxygen by haemoglobin. This results in easier oxygen release in capillaries. When we breathe in oxygen, red blood cells transport it around to every cell in our body, a critical process which results in an increase of ATP. Red blood cells carry oxygen efficiently because of a special protein inside of them called haemoglobin. As blood passes through the lungs, the haemoglobin picks up oxygen because of the increased oxygen pressure in the capillaries of the lungs, and can then release this oxygen to body cells where the oxygen pressure in the tissues is lower. In addition, the red blood cells can pick up the waste product, carbon dioxide, some of which is carried by the haemoglobin (at a different site from where it carries the oxygen), while the rest is dissolved in the plasma. The high carbon dioxide levels in the tissues lowers the pH, and the binding of haemoglobin to carbon dioxide causes a conformational change that facilitates the release of oxygen. The carbon dioxide is then released once the red blood cells reach the lungs. Riox will increase Co2 levels, the client’s skin pH will be lowed and Oxygen in the cells will increase. This helps the cells carry out their natural function and speeds up the repair and regeneration process.
Treatment
The carboxy gel is applied evenly over the face and neck. The face and neck mask are then placed on top of the gel. The mask is tapped gently to generate Co2. The Co2 penetrates the blood vessels which in turn release oxygen via haemoglobin. The gel will bubble on the skin whilst the mask is applied for 20-30 minutes. The chemical reaction that takes place effectively helps to remove unwanted toxins from the skin whilst at the same time increasing skin nutrition. The active ingredients will improve skin elasticity, strengthening skin pores, resulting in a reduction of size over a course of treatments.
